Megan McKenna will be joining St. Petersburg College’s Lady Titans this fall to play Volleyball. The Tampa Bay Times reports, “McKenna was a starting setter for the [Lakewood] Spartans, who advanced to the Class 5A region final”. Megan had a choice to play with USF; however, she signed a scholarship to play for SPC and will be starting this fall. Congratulations Megan! We look forward to having you on our team.

Corbin, a right handed pitcher for St. Petersburg College’s men’s baseball team, has been drafted by the Chicago Cubs. He was selected in the 14th round at pick 434. For a recap of the draft, check out Major League Baseball’s Draft Tracker.

According to a recent article from the Idaho Press-Tribune, the 13 college players the Cubs just signed may have a chance to play for their Class A club in Boise, the Boise Hawks.

Greta Veinberga receives Team M.V.P. and 2011-2012 Female Athlete of the Year!Greta Veinberga, one of our SPC ladies tennis players, has received the honor of making the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) 2012 All-America Teams for NJCAA/CCCAA Tennis. She finished #3 in singles within the country, won Team M.V.P. and was named Female Athlete of the Year for SPC. Congratulations Greta!

To receive the All-America Teams honor, Greta needed to either finish within the Singles Top 10 or finish within the Doubles Top 5 of the final Campbell/ITA Rankings. Please take a moment to read the ITA announcement and congratulate Greta for her accomplishment. Go Titans!

Two players from this year’s baseball team and one former player were selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, which ended Wednesday.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Corbin Hoffner was taken in the 14th round by the Chicago Cubs. He was 5-6 this season with a 2.56 ERA in 77.1 innings with 76 strikeouts. He also received the team’s Titan award, given to the best overall student/athlete, Coach Ryan Beckman said.
Reliever Austen Thraikill was selected in the 26th round by the Texas Rangers. The sophomore left-hander made 22 appearances, throwing 32.1 innings and striking out 36.
Jake Rogers, a member of the 2010 team, was taken in the 40th round out of Mount Oliver University. He was the Carolina Conference Player of the Year.
Beckman also announced that four players from this year’s team have signed or will sign soon.
Zach Gordon is headed to Jacksonville University. Bruce Wong is bound for Lincoln Memorial University. Lincoln Dunham is going to Eckerd College. Kolbe Andrade is still weighing his options, Beckman said.

Chicago Cubs first baseman and former St. Petersburg College star Bryan LaHair was featured this week in the Tampa Bay Times. LaHair was in the minors for 10 years and now has more homers than fellow first basemen Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder. In the June 6 article, LaHair talks about his road to SPC and, along with other former Titans, the majors.

Ryan Beckman was named the baseball coach at St. Petersburg College Friday.

He was interim coach last season after replacing former coach Rob Francis who was dismissed shortly before the 2012 season began.

Beckman, 27, grew up in Dunedin and played baseball at Dunedin High School and Pasco-Hernando Community College.

“Ryan did an exceptional job for us last season under very difficult circumstances,” Athletic Director Mark Strickland said. “We had a lot of strong candidates but felt Ryan had earned the right for this opportunity.”

Beckman said he was thankful for the opportunity. “I know the great history St. Petersburg College has in baseball and I’m excited to be able to work hard to maintain that,” he said.
