Long-time St. Petersburg College baseball coach Dave Pano resigned Friday after an allegation that he improperly promised a scholarship to a potential player.
“It appears Coach Pano used inappropriate judgment in granting a scholarship,” SPC Athletic Director Mark Strickland said. “We appreciate all he has done for the program over the past 13 years, but we have to insist that our coaches exercise appropriate control over scholarships. We accept his resignation with regret.”
Pano resigned following a complaint to the college and the Florida Community College Activities Association, which is investigating.
In 13 seasons at SPC, Pano’s overall record was 392-180-1. He led the college to its first state title in 2005. The team finished second in the nation in 2005 at the JuCo World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. Pano was named Florida Junior College Coach of the Year in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007.
